This coming Dec. 23, Busan Port will mark 10 million in TEU handling.
The Busan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries revealed Dec. 9 that it handled 9.45 million TEU by the end of November adding 895 thousand TEU in November. This figure represents an increase of 10.2% compared to the same period last year when cargoes recorded 8.58 million TEU.
As it is expected to handle between 880 and 900 thousand TEU this December, similar to November, Busan will pass the 10 million TEU yearly handling volume level this Dec.
23, Busan MOMAF assumed.
Busan Port will be the fifth port world wide to handle 10 million TEU.
Hong kong and Singapore, the first and second largest container terminals in the world, reached 10 million TEU last year by handling 19 million TEU and 16 million TEU, respectively. Shanghai passed 10 million TEU Nov. 28 and Shenzen is predicted to hit its goal a little bit faster than Busan, by handling 100 thousand TEU more.
Busan MOMAF will hold ceremony to celebrate breaking the 10 million TEU level at the Gamman terminal on Dec. 23.
An insider from Busan MOMAF said that it has great meaning for Busan to pass 10 million TEU in that it overcame the trucker's strike and typhoon damage. It would also be fruitful to draw foreign shipping companies to Busan as the port grew by 10% over last year in spite of a lack of facilities and bad luck, he added.
